A10 year survey of neonatal kidney mass in Khorasan Province of the I.R. of Iran

Background :

Although abdominal mass in neonates is not common, it is very critical to detect it promptly . 2/3 of neonatal abdominal mass can be attributes to the kidney . Correct diagnosis and immediate management can prevent morbidity and mortality. This study pays special attention to incidence, associated anomalies and mortality rate in those neonates who suffered from palpable kidney mass.

Patients and methods:48,250 neonates were examined for abdominal mass by neonatalogist or pediatric resident in 10 years. Sonograghy in palpable cases of abdominal masses was performed to confirm the diagnosis . In all cases of neonatal death, autopsy was performed .

Results: It was apparent that 30 of the 48,250 neonates suffered from abdominal mass due to nephromegaly) 1/1600 (Polycystic kidney) p.c.k.(was the most common cause of renal enlargement. Multicystic kidney disease ) m.c.k(and hydronephrosis were the second and third causes of renal enlargement .

Conclusion:It was revealed that most of the abdominal masses in our study were renal masses and mortality) 73%(was higher than other reports. Also, we found that polycystic kidney disease) PCK (was the most common abdominal mass in our patients. Lung hypoplasia was the most common cause of death in P.C.K. cases.
